Personalized Medical Alert Dogs

Custom Trained to Support Your Needs and Your Daily Life

Reliant Medical Alert Dogs is developing a personalized medical alert dog program for individuals who need support managing recurring medical episodes, symptoms, or body changes that are detectable through scent.

While our first Reliant medical alert dogs are not yet ready for placement, we are accepting inquiries from potential clients and beginning the sample collection process. Starting early allows us to learn more about each person’s needs, gather scent samples, and prepare for scent imprinting with a complete understanding of the client’s medical alert needs and goals.

Every person’s body chemistry is unique. We are breeding, raising, and training dogs specifically for medical alert service work. Dogs will be carefully matched and trained around the client’s needs, lifestyle, and daily routine.

What Is a Personalized Medical Alert Dog?

A personalized medical alert dog is a trained service dog that learns to recognize changes connected to a person’s specific medical condition or episodes.

These dogs will be trained to alert when they detect: a scent, behavior, or other change that indicates a medical event. The handler will then know to take action, sit down, evaluate the condition, follow the care plan, or seek help. Dogs can be trained to press a button to alert predetermined contacts, caregivers, or emergency services. They can provide medication reminders, carry life saving meds in their service dog equipment, and do light pressure therapy as those meds take effect. The dogs can interrupt tics and other subconscious nervous behaviors.

Medical alert dogs can be life changing for individuals who experience conditions such as:

  • POTS or fainting episodes

  • Blood sugar changes

  • Migraines

  • Seizure-related episodes

  • Anxiety or panic episodes

  • MCAS

  • Other scent-detectable medical episodes or symptoms

Fully Trained Dogs From Reliant

Reliant is dedicated to providing fully trained medical alert dogs that are bred, raised, and trained by our team. We begin by connecting with prospective clients to understand their unique needs, challenges, and daily routines. During this process, we collect scent samples that will later be used to develop personalized alert responses.

This early preparation creates a strong foundation for both the dog and its future handler. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of each client’s symptoms, lifestyle, and scent profile, we can thoughtfully match dogs with their future partners and tailor training to their specific needs. From early scent imprinting and puppy hood through advanced task training, each dog is carefully prepared to become a reliable and responsive medical alert partner.

How Personalized Scent Training Works

Scent training begins with a sample collection kit provided by Reliant. This kit allows the client to collect scent samples during symptoms or episodes, as well as control samples when they are not experiencing symptoms.

These samples teach the dog the difference between the client’s normal scent and the scent changes that occur during a medical episode.

Clients collect two main types of samples:

Hot samples are collected while actively experiencing symptoms or during an episode.

Control samples are collected when the client is not experiencing symptoms. These teach the dog what the client’s normal baseline scent is.

Control samples include a normal baseline sample, a mental stress control sample, and a physical stress control sample. This helps the dog learn to differentiate between a true target odor and other everyday changes in the body.

Getting Started

Interested individuals can begin the process now.

Early steps include:

  • Learning whether a medical alert dog may be a good fit

  • Sharing information about symptoms, lifestyle, and goals

  • Receiving a scent sample collection kit

  • Collecting hot samples during symptoms or episodes

  • Collecting control samples when there are no symptoms

  • Staying connected with Reliant throughout the process

Training Built Around the Individual

Every client has different symptoms, routines, environments, needs, and goals. Thus, each Reliant medical alert dog will be trained with a customized approach.

Depending on the client’s needs, training may include:

  • Scent-based alert training

  • Public access skills

  • Home support behaviors

  • Task training based on the client’s needs

  • Confidence in public environments

  • Handler bonding and transition work

  • Follow-up support after placement

Support After Placement

A medical alert dog partnership does not end when the dog goes home.

Once dogs are ready for placement, Reliant will provide handler education, transition guidance, follow-up support, refresher training, and check-ins to help each team continue building confidence together.

We want each handler to understand how to work with their dog, reinforce alerts, maintain training, and build a strong long-term partnership.

Important Medical Disclaimer

Medical alert dogs are support tools. They are not a replacement for medical care, professional diagnosis, prescribed treatment, emergency services, or advice from a healthcare provider.

A medical alert dog may help increase awareness and support daily independence, but any medical concerns should still be managed with the guidance of qualified healthcare professionals.

Reliant may ask about your medical history, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals to better understand whether a medical alert dog is an appropriate fit.

Is a Medical Alert Dog Right for You?

A personalized medical alert dog can be life-changing for individuals who experience recurring medical episodes or symptoms and are looking for additional support in daily life. Often, a medical alert service dog can learn to recognize early signs of an impending episode allowing their person precious time to safely position themselves or intervene with appropriate medications.

Because these dogs require time, consistency, and a strong handler relationship, Reliant works carefully with each potential client to understand their needs and determine whether this partnership is the right match.
